Searching for the Goat Man

SEARCHING FOR THE GOAT MAN–Compelling, sharp and sophisticated, the plot is swift and gripping. Searching for the Goat Man is  the quintessential American road novel for any one  who enjoys both American myths and legends and a good road story.”                                                                                                                                                                              Writers Digest 2018

1966–On a lonesome back road in Georgia, lost in a thick fog, a 1956 Rambler Classic inches steadily forward barely faster than a man can walk when it comes upon an apparition, a ghost rising in the mist. Makeshift wagons on old iron wheels grind on the uneven pavement, pulled by a small herd of goats tethered together by the web of a makeshift harness. A ragged old man, his long sliver gray hair and beard shifts in the thick morning air as he stands on the floor boards scanning the empty road ahead. The car passes and a young boy in the back seat turns to see the old man, his wagon, and his goats before they disappear in the fog. Their eyes meet…and the story begins.

For some, fate and destiny roll upon the same track. Such is the case of E. Alex Fleming, a young writer whose first book; a World War Two epic about the unlikely friendship between a World War Two airman and the black fighter pilot who saves his life, becomes a huge success only to crash and burn amid allegations of plagiarism.

In a single day Alex looses everything. So too, his young intern agent Kimberly Siecrest, who believed in him when no one else did, looses everything as well.

Together they set out to find the one story that will be their salvation; a man, and the last real life “Johnny Appleseed” American legend that Alex once encountered on the back roads of Georgia when he was a young boy; a man known as America’s Goat Man.

As they retrace the footsteps of the Goat Man across America they discover something even more profound; love, perhaps for the first time in each of their lives.

In the end Alex finds the Goat Man in an ending that is as haunting, as it is unexpected.

And through it all, Alex learns that though it is not possible to live forever, it is possible… to love forever.

PLEASE NOTE–This is the same book!

For those who purchased the original black cover “GOAT MAN” the new version entitled “Searching for the Goat Man” is the same book with an updated title and cover.

The reason for this is when Writer’s Digest reviewed the book they gave it a glowing review with the exception of the cover–they didn’t like it. The explanation: book sales are often driven by the appearance of the cover-often over 40%. In the case of the original GOAT MAN cover, the reflection of the title on a total black background  looked as if it was melting as if the book was a horror book (which it is not).

After careful consideration I realized that they were right. The old cover did not convey the true spirit of the book. The new cover features a wonderful character model named Jack Jeske who will also appear in a series of Goat Man graphic arts projects (see below).

GOAT MAN ART –John (Jack) Jeske

The art on this page was inspired by the real Goat Man (Ches McCartney) however the man in these artist renderings is not Ches McCartney. His name is John (Jack) Jeske whose appearance bares an uncanny resemblance to Mr. McCartney in his later years. Jack first appeared as The Goat Man on the cover of my novel “Searching for the Goat Man” and the image generated so much interest that I decided to create a series around the inspiration of that character, which I will refer to in the future as the Goat Man Art Series.
